Information for professionals
Sparkbrook Children’s Zone (SCZ) is a partnership project between Birmingham Children’s Hospital, GreensquareAccord’s Early Help Team and South Doc Service’s Balsall Heath, Moseley and Sparkhill Primary Care Network (PCN).
Sparkbrook Children’s Zone is funded by Birmingham & Solihull Integrated Care Board and Children, Young People’s Transformation NHS England to deliver place-based paediatric primary care and Early Help clinics, serving 14,000 children and families registered within the PCN. Early intervention and prevention are the key ambition of the clinics and community outreach, to address the social determinants of health and reduce pressures on secondary care and statutory services.
We are based in Balsall Heath, Sparkbrook, and Sparkhill because we know that in this area children, young people, and families tend to have poorer health outcomes; such as long-term asthma, tooth decay, and constipation.
Our families also need support for issues such as parenting, diet & nutrition, and behaviour. When families come to the Sparkbrook Children’s Zone clinic, we can support them with their children’s health needs and the wider holistic social care needs of the whole family.
To encourage families to be as healthy as possible, we promote the following advice:
- Have children vaccinated when they are offered it.
- Avoid smoking exposure.
- Attend school or nursery regularly.
- Take Healthy Start vitamins (free for under 4’s in Birmingham).
- Exercise.
- Avoid sugary snacks and drinks.
